The binding posts are of notable quality and are not the cheap plastic style found on many similar products. This is way easier than, say, a system that forces you to scroll through 26 uppercase letters, another 26 lowercase letters, and then numeric and other characters. Also, instead of forcing you to use the remote to enter login and password info for all connected Internet streaming services, you just log into Stream Magic (\u003ca class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stream-magic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003ewww.stream-magic.com\u003c\/a\u003e) and set up an account to link your player to your streaming media accounts like Rhapsody, Pandora, Sirius XM and others. For speakers, I grabbed a pair of Aero 2's. These speakers run around $500\/pair and come in either a Black or Dark Walnut veneer that isn't real fancy. In fact, the speakers are rather vanilla, with boxed corners and a front-firing port that lacks any flaring but does have a rubberized front half that should serve to diffract the audio being output. The driver complement is also unusual in that the Aero 2 uses a system it calls BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator). Instead of a traditional tweeter, the Aero 2 (and other Aero speakers in the line for that matter) use a driver that looks more conventional, but measures just over 1-3\/4\" across its flat radiator. The BMR can play back frequencies down to roughly 250Hz—far lower than conventional tweeters that drop out around 2.5kHz. This frees up the woofer (which Cambridge says is 6-1\/2\" but we'd put it at a generous 5-3\/4\"). The problem, however, is that the highs end up being rather bright and sibilant. On top of that, I saw little benefit for the woofers, with the bass coming across as neither tight nor punchy. It helped considerably when running a full system and the enhancement it provided really made the system sound a lot better. Overall, I'd have to say that I really enjoyed the capabilities of the Minx Xi, but I can't recommend the Aero 2 speakers—at least not if you appreciate detailed highs with a lot of finesse and punchy, tight bass. basic power amplifier is rated to deliver 90 watts per channel into 8-ohm loads from 20 to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0.05 per cent distortion, or 140 watts into 4-ohm loads with no more than 0.1 per cent distortion. Like the other Power Line amplifiers, it features Crown’s proprietary Multi-Mode circuit, which continuously varies the operating mode of the amplifier between class A and class B according to the instantaneous signal output it is called upon to deliver. Crown points out that with ordinary music program material the amplifier actually operates in this mode most of the time. As the instantaneous power of the signal waveform rises above 20 milliwatts, the output transistors change to class-B operation, the highest-efficiency mode of a linear audio amplifier. Since the Power Line 3 is completely direct-coupled from its input jacks to the speaker outputs, the speakers are protected with a low-frequency interrupt circuit that places the amplifier in a stand-by mode if it senses more than 10 millivolts of direct current at the output. Each channel has its own thermal protection system, which also places the amplifier in stand-by mode until it has cooled to a safe temperature. Finally, an a.c.-line fuse protects the entire amplifier against a catastrophic internal failure. The chassis and large heat-sink fins that extend to the rear are finished in fiat black. The front panel contains a pushbutton power switch, two in-put-level knobs with thirty detented settings, and a headphone jack. Two groups of colored LED’s between the knobs, designated a “Frequency Analyzing Display,” show the approximate frequency content of the program (for each channel, yellow, green, and red lights, respectively, come on for low-, medium-, and high-frequency signals). Above the display are two red lights marked IOC (input\/output comparator). The Power Line 3 has circuits that constantly compare the input and output waveforms, and any difference between them causes the corresponding channel's IOC light to flash. Well folks, it's never too late for old dogs, because I'm pretty sure I've found a unique non-headphone headphone—one that will instantly satisfy both headphone connoisseurs and stubborn contrarians: the RAAL-Requisite SR1a's ($3499). These radical high-tech contraptions sit lightly on your head and neither cover your ears nor put pressure on your pinna. Plus! He's the founder and chief engineer of Serbian manufacturing company RAAL Advanced Loudspeakers, established in 1995, which manufactures a range of dipole ribbon tweeters (footnote 1). Aleksandar is also co-founder and director of R\u0026amp;D and manufacturing for Requisite Audio Engineering of Ventura, California, which is responsible for the creation of the RAAL-Requisite SR1a ribbon headphones, which the company describes with the trademarked descriptor \"Earfield Monitors.\"\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/www.stereophile.com\/images\/120gram.1b.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"639\" alt=\"120gram.1\" loading=\"lazy\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\nTo the best of my knowledge, the RAAL SR1a's contain the world's first and only full-range, pure-ribbon drive-units. To qualify as a pure ribbon, the diaphragm must be a thin, rectangular strip of metal foil, attached only at its narrow ends and energized by rows of permanent magnets at its sides. The diaphragm of a pure ribbon is not attached to a film substrate, as with Magnepan's quasi-ribbons or various manufacturers' air-motion transformer tweeters. The SR1a's design aesthetic relies heavily on laser-cut stainless-steel rectangles and thick buffalo leather. To situate the RAALs properly on my head, I needed to adjust the length of the broad leather top band and the narrower leather back-of-head band. These two bands combine to center the twin 3.77\" × 0.75\" (95mm × 19mm) open-baffle ribbon-drivers on the entrance to my ear canals.\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\nAlong the front edge of each SR1a baffle is a 0.65\" × 4\" roll of red-orange memory foam wrapped in Italian lambskin suede. That foam-and-suede roll keeps the SR1a off the head and away from the ears. The back part of each earpiece features a gusseted pentagonal wing made of what appears to be lenticular gray-black carbon fiber. The Pass Labs amp took said resolution and transparency to the next higher level, and added more physical weight to the presentation. But both amplifiers are under 100Wpc. So I decided to try a more powerful amplifier, one that many people recommend for the SR1a headphones: \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.stereophile.com\/content\/benchmark-media-systems-ahb2-power-amplifier\"\u003eBenchmark's AHB2\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e stereo amp. Most important, the Benchmark amp is specified to deliver greater than 29A into 1 ohm (!) and 80V peak-to-peak into any load. The manual says it can put 130Wpc into 6 ohm loads such as the RAAL SR1a.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cspan\u003eThe AHB2 drove the RAAL ribbons with authoritative clarity. Playing \"Cet Enfant-là\" from Alexandre Tharaud's \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eBarbara\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e (44.1\/24 FLAC, Erato Warner Classic\/Qobuz), I experienced an avalanche of previously unheard inner detail. The AHB2 made the SR1a's feel like an aural microscope. The spit and wet throat were missing from Aubert's vocals.
